Goldfinch Bird
Introduction of the bird – American Goldfinch
This handsome little finch is the state bird of New Jersey, Iowa, and Washington. It is welcomed and common at Birdzfy, which mostly takes sunflower and nyjer seeds.
Males in spring are brilliant yellow and shiny black with a dash of white. Females and winter birds look duller. However, they stand out because of their conical bills and pointed, notched tails. During molts, they appear absurdly patchy.

Distribution and Habitat of the American Goldfinch:
The American goldfinch migrates short distances. It flies south when the weather gets colder and food becomes scarce. The southerly migration begins when daily lows reach around 0 °F. In winter, it moves through southern Canada, the southern U.S., and parts of Mexico.
The goldfinch mainly lives in weedy fields and floodplains. Thistles and asters are common plants in these areas. They also occur in cultivated lands, along roadsides, in orchards and in backyards. American Goldfinches, like most finches, can be found at feeders all year, but are most numerous during winter months.
American Goldfinch down in the garden:
Birdseed should also be checked for spoilage. The seed must be fresh and dry for the goldfinch to enjoy it. Use baffles to keep the seed dry. Also, pick feeders that allow air to circulate around the seed. This helps stop mold from forming. Remove hulls, dispose of unconsumed seed beneath bird feeders. This will lower the chance of spreading diseases to finches and other birds that feed on the ground, such as sparrows and doves.

American Goldfinch Breeding
Breeding of American Goldfinch:
After a male finds a mate, he chooses a territory and marks its borders, warbling as he flies from perch to perch.
The female builds the nest in the branches of a deciduous shrub or tree in late summer at a height of up to 10 m (33 ft). Nest construction takes about 6 days, and the female works in bouts of 10–40 min. The male often travels with the female as she gathers nesting materials. He might bring some materials to the nest, but he does not help build it.
American Goldfinch and its relatives:
Lesser Goldfinch – Capitoid small finch with a conical bill. Adults are yellow below, with a glossy black cap and wing patches. Their backs may be solid glossy black or dull green, especially west of the Rockies.
