Finally, summer arrives and with it, comes our avian pals who come to fill up and cool off at our backyard bird feeders. Hungry and thirsty birds are there, and feeding because there is food, but removing potential contaminants to ensure happy, healthy birds is paramount. In this article, we couple up with you some tips, techniques to maintain bird feeders to be in the best condition at summer. Well, let’s jump right into it bird feeder care and welcome all of our feathered friends!

Routine Cleaning: Routine cleaning is the building block for bird feeder care. Once every one to two weeks, take your feeders down and clean them out well with a mixture of mild soap and warm water. Remove any dirt, debris or mold that may have built up. Be sure to rinse them well and let them air dry completely before refilling.

Sanitize with Diluted Bleach Solution: You can sanitize your feeders if you want to be more hygienic. Mix up a bleach solution (one part bleach to nine parts water) and soak the feeder in it for approximately 10 minutes. Afterward, rinse out the feeder thoroughly with clean water, then allow to air dry. This process cleans all of this gunk off of their feathers, which helps to kill off bacteria and prevents the spread of various diseases in birds.

Don’t Overfill: In the summer when it’s warm, do not over-fill your bird feeders. Fill them with just enough seed for birds to eat during a day or two. This makes seed spoilage, mold, and attracting unwanted pests less likely.

Pest Management: Often the biggest headaches bird feeders face come in the form of pesky pests like squirrels, raccoons and ants. To prevent squirrels from feeding on your bird feed, use baffles or squirrel-proof feeders; place feeders on poles, or use cayenne pepper or petroleum jelly as natural deterrents on the poles of your feeders. Monitor for activity regularly and treat signs of pest activity swiftly.

Water Source: Birds need fresh water to drink and bathe. Place a shallow birdbath or other water source near your feeders. Clean the water vessel and refill it often lest stagnant water serves as a breeding ground for mosquito.

Seed Quality and Rotation: Use high-quality bird seed appropriate to the birds you want to attract. Seek out seed mixes that don’t contain filler or cheap add-ins, as these often create more waste and drive away undesirable birds. Just like any other perishable factor, rotation and use of fresh seed is a good practice in maintaining its nutritional value and also to avoid getting spoiled. 7. Observation and Maintenance Records: Monitor the activity in the area around your bird feeders, keeping notes of the types of birds you see. Making sure to note anything different about feeding, odd behavior, or unwellliness. If you want to fix this, you should regularly observe its body, which will help you to identify early.
