Routine Cleaning: Routine cleaning is the building block for bird feeder care. Once every one to two weeks, take your feeders down and clean them out well with a mixture of mild soap and warm water. Remove any dirt, debris or mold that may have built up. Be sure to rinse them well and let them air dry completely before refilling.

Sanitize with Diluted Bleach Solution: You can clean your feeders to be more hygienic. Make a bleach solution by mixing one part bleach with nine parts water. Soak the feeder in this mix for about 10 minutes. Afterward, rinse out the feeder thoroughly with clean water, then allow to air dry. This process removes gunk from feathers. This helps kill bacteria and stops the spread of diseases in birds.

Don’t Overfill: In the summer when it’s warm, do not over-fill your bird feeders. Fill them with just enough seed for birds to eat during a day or two. This makes seed spoilage, mold, and attracting unwanted pests less likely.

Pest Management: Bird feeders often deal with annoying pests like squirrels, raccoons, and ants.

To stop squirrels from eating your bird feed, try these tips:

  • Use baffles or squirrel-proof feeders.

  • Place feeders on poles.

  • Apply cayenne pepper or petroleum jelly on the poles as natural deterrents.

Monitor for activity on a regular basis and treat signs of pest activity without delay.

Water Source: Birds need fresh water to drink and bathe. Place a shallow birdbath or other water source near your feeders. Clean the water vessel regularly and refill it often. Stagnant water can attract mosquitoes.

Seed Quality and Rotation: Use good bird seed that suits the birds you want to attract. Look for seed mixes without fillers or cheap add-ins. These can create waste and attract unwanted birds. Using fresh seed and rotating it is a smart way to keep its nutrients and prevent spoilage. Observation and Maintenance Records: Watch the area around your bird feeders. How to Take Apart and Clean Your Birdfy

Rotate the antenna sideways 90 degrees to avoid breaking it. Open the top of your Birdfy and pull it out until it pops out.

Turn the perch screw in the opposite direction (counterclockwise) to remove the perch. If you have the Hummee extension on, unclip the buckles at both ends. Then, pull it out.

Loosen a screw underneath the back edge of the feeder body under the feeding tray near the charging port. Counterclockwise, unscrew it and remove the feeding tray.

Scrub the roof, perch and feeding tray in a bucket with a brush and soapy water.

Scrub the inside of the bird seed bin with a long-handled brush. Ensure that you seal the silicone cover on the camera to prevent water from entering it.

Make sure to dry your Birdfy well before reassembling and putting it back into use!
