Birds are all about food and safety. Similar to us humans these little creatures are searching for food and making homes to meet their basic survival needs every day. Providing adequate supplies of food and water is why this is the first step you need to take to attract these birds.

(You should spend a significant part of the day thinking about what delicious and appropriate food nourishment you can provide for your local birds before you put it into your feeder — detailed tips on this are found further down in this article). However, efforts like this go a long way in creating a dreamy feeding scene for these adorable critters to recognize. As soon as they find the feeder and also identify a consistent food resource, the birds will come routinely.

(Fun fact: Most birds have quite a lousy sense of smell so that when they’re looking for food, they do it almost exclusively by sight, occasionally aided by their hearing.) Birds are attracted to the sound of dripping water and the water fountain more readily especially in winter. Also, bright colors are said to attract birds to visit as discussed below in the later sections.

Bird feeders need to be on a safe location to ensure no threatening creatures reach out to them, and feeding birds should be at various heights for other bird species. They fly to a new feeder directly as they are cautious and feared that they could be harmed and in danger from predators such as cats/hawks/other animals(and humans of course). They want a very sheltered position but they might not be too exposed so there must be some hiding places such as trees or large bushes nearby (but you have to avoid offering up the feeders next to small bushes in which cats can hide).

Bird feeders are not necessarily recommended to be exposed to them on the ground, but they should be mounted at least 5 feet from the ground (as it is known in other contexts How High Should Bird Feeders Be from Ground) to prevent simply jumping squirrels and cats. Tube feeders placed higher up are ideal for small birds such as finches and chickadees, while platform feeders are great for larger birds such as cardinals, jays and doves. In addition to that, you should also provide a standing/staging perch for the birds to rest and savour the meal at their own pace. Birdfy Pro Perch Extension and Birdfy Hummee Extension

As mentioned earlier, food is the primary component that brings birds to your feeder. We cover the best available seed types to meet the needs of different birds, plus some tips to try to get the right seeds for different seasons of the year.

The basic bar for inviting your local birds to visit is the right food. The good news with bird food in general, is to keep it fresh–not moldy or rancid, which can kill birds—up to a point. If no rain or snow (wet food repels birds too) all the bird seeds within 2 weeks should be replaced and refilled in at least. If you feed your feeder to be an endless supplier of seeds, birds will branch out. Birdfy Smart Feeder & Birdfy Feeder Bamboo provide ample bird seeds with a food capacity of 1.5L(50oz) & 3L(101oz), allowing birds to see it & linger longer.

Black oil sunflower seed: Most any bird welcomes this seed type.

White proso millet: A favorite of Juncos, doves, and small sparrows.

Fruity food: Good for woodpeckers and robins.

Peanut: Preferred by the blue jays and nuthatches.

Nectars: For the little darling hummingbirds.

Skip those mixed seeds that contain some “filler” seeds that hardly any birds like. If you place mixed seeds in one feeder, be mindful that there might be a few visits where one or two types of seeds aren’t favored by certain aggressive visitors. For example, those seeds may be scattered in the ground and this may prevent the gentler birds from approaching (even though a few birds like eating on the ground). And so separating different types of seed in different feeders may entice more birds to dine at the same time. You can also try to install a Birdfy Anti-scattering Cover to reduce this phenomenon.

If you want to draw feathered visitors, you also need to change the types of seeds throughout the year depending on the season! Sunflower seed is a good summer choice, as it won’t easily spoil in warm summer weather. Birds require additional protein from mixed seeds during autumn and this will help them to get ready for the approaching winter. During the transition from winter to spring, birds need seeds that contain more fat and calories to produce energy and look after the baby birds.

The most suitable time to establish a bird feeder is the mid to late of fall most of the birds(not all) migrate during the autumn to find somewhere that provides vegetation, water, and food for them to survive the severe winter. In summer and early autumn, birds have access to ample natural food supplies, making it challenging for them to visit bird feeders introduced into human habitats. They common fly around and search for food during morning and late in the day in one day.
